David Silver, one of the leading figures behind modern reinforcement learning, has raised $1.1 billion for his new startup, Ineffable Intelligence, at a valuation of $5.1 billion. The company is focused on developing artificial intelligence systems capable of learning independently, without relying on human-generated data, according to TechCrunch.
A Shift Toward Self-Learning AI
The startup’s core ambition is to build what Silver describes as a “superlearner”—an AI system that can improve itself through interaction and feedback, rather than training on vast datasets curated by humans. The approach centers on advancements in reinforcement learning, a field where Silver has played a foundational role.

Silver previously led reinforcement learning efforts at DeepMind, where he co-developed systems such as AlphaZero. AlphaZero became widely known for mastering complex games like chess and Go without prior human knowledge, relying instead on self-play to reach superhuman performance.
