U.S. Small Business Optimism Climbs to Four-Month High Despite Inflation Concerns

Confidence among U.S. small business owners improved in June, with the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB) Small Business Optimism Index rising to 97.4, its highest level in four months.

The reading increased from 95.3 in May and exceeded economists’ expectations of 95.8, reflecting stronger sentiment regarding future business conditions and sales prospects.

The improvement was driven by a rebound in expectations for the economy over the next six months. The net share of business owners expecting better business conditions increased by 10 percentage points to 13%, while expectations for real sales also strengthened during the month.

Despite the improvement in overall confidence, inflation remained the most significant challenge facing small businesses. Twenty-one percent of respondents identified inflation as their single most important business problem, an increase of three percentage points from May and the highest reading since October 2024.

At the same time, the share of business owners planning to raise prices in the coming months declined, suggesting that pricing intentions moderated even as inflation remained a primary concern.

The survey also indicated continued caution regarding hiring and capital investment, as business owners weighed the effects of elevated interest rates and moderate economic growth.

According to the National Federation of Independent Business, lower fuel prices have helped ease cost pressures for both businesses and consumers, contributing to expectations for improved operating conditions in the months ahead. However, borrowing costs and the pace of economic expansion continue to influence investment and hiring decisions.

The NFIB Small Business Optimism Index is a closely watched measure of confidence among U.S. small businesses and is considered an important indicator of economic activity, employment trends and investment intentions across the sector.
