OpenAI Appoints Former White House AI Adviser to Lead New Strategic Futures Team

OpenAI has appointed Dean Ball, a former senior policy adviser on artificial intelligence and emerging technology at the White House Office of Science and Technology Policy, to lead a newly created team focused on frontier AI policy.

Ball announced that he will join OpenAI on July 6 as head of Strategic Futures, a unit established to support the company’s leadership in addressing long-term policy and governance issues related to advanced artificial intelligence systems.

According to Ball, the team will report to Chief Strategy Officer Jason Kwon and will focus on topics including catastrophic AI risk, recursive self-improvement, labor market impacts, and the evolving relationship between frontier AI laboratories, governments, and society.

The group’s responsibilities will include both public policy initiatives and internal governance matters, working alongside OpenAI’s technical, legal, preparedness, national security, and executive leadership teams.

Ball said he will continue serving as a nonresident senior fellow at the Foundation for American Innovation while assuming his new responsibilities at OpenAI.

The appointment comes as AI developers face increasing scrutiny from policymakers worldwide over the governance, safety, and economic implications of increasingly capable AI systems.

The move also follows recent talent shifts across the industry, including reports that Noam Shazeer, a senior engineering executive and Gemini AI co-lead at Google, is leaving the company to join OpenAI.

OpenAI and rival Anthropic remain among the leading companies developing frontier AI models, with both organizations playing a central role in ongoing discussions surrounding regulation, safety standards, and the future direction of artificial intelligence.
