Brazil’s Economic Activity Rises 0.3% in August as Industry and Services Recover

Brazil’s economic activity increased 0.3% in August 2026 compared with July, reversing a 0.2% decline in the previous month, according to data from the Central Bank of Brazil.

The result matched market expectations and reflected a recovery in industrial production and continued growth in the services sector, partially offset by weaker agricultural activity.

On an annual basis, the IBC-Br economic activity index rose 1.2%, indicating that overall activity remained above its level in August 2025.

The index is closely monitored as an indicator of economic performance ahead of the release of official gross domestic product (GDP) figures.

Industry Leads Economic Recovery

Brazil’s industrial sector recorded a 0.9% increase in activity in August, recovering from a 0.4% contraction in July.

The rebound made industry an important contributor to the improvement in the overall economic activity index.

Services activity also strengthened, increasing 0.2% after remaining unchanged in the previous month.

The tax component of the IBC-Br rose 0.1%, reversing a 0.2% decline in July.

Together, the results suggest that economic activity improved across several sectors during August, although the recovery was not uniform.

Agricultural Activity Contracts for Second Month

Agriculture and livestock remained a weak point in Brazil’s economic performance.

Activity in the sector declined 1.8% in August, following a 1.2% contraction in July.

The consecutive decreases contrasted with the recovery observed in industry and services.

Excluding agriculture and livestock, Brazil’s IBC-Br index increased 0.3% during the month, matching the overall index’s growth rate.

The figures highlight differences in economic performance across the country’s major productive sectors.

What the IBC-Br Indicates About Brazil’s Economy

The IBC-Br, published by the Central Bank of Brazil, measures economic activity using information from agriculture, industry, services and taxes.

Although it is often considered a preliminary indicator of GDP trends, the index is not an official GDP measurement.

Brazil’s official GDP figures are compiled by the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE), using a broader statistical methodology.

The August reading suggests that the Brazilian economy regained some momentum following July’s decline, with industry and services supporting the recovery.

However, the contraction in agricultural activity demonstrates that growth remained uneven.

The 1.2% annual increase also indicates that economic activity continued to expand compared with the same period last year, despite monthly fluctuations.

The latest figures provide an updated picture of Brazil’s economic performance as policymakers and economists assess domestic demand, sector activity and the broader pace of growth during the second half of 2026.
