U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday (6) that his administration will significantly raise the current 25% tariff on India within the next 24 hours. The move, he stated, is a direct response to India’s continued purchases of Russian oil.
“We agreed on 25%, but I think I’m going to raise that very substantially in the next 24 hours because they’re buying oil from Russia,” Trump said in an interview with CNBC.
The tariff escalation comes amid growing geopolitical tensions over global energy trade and the strengthening of strategic alliances among Global South nations and major powers such as Russia and China. The move also signals a potential hardening of the U.S. stance toward countries that continue to defy economic sanctions imposed on Moscow since the start of the war in Ukraine.
As of now, the Indian government has not officially responded to the statement.
