A knife attack inside a Walmart in Traverse City, northern Michigan, left 11 people injured, six of whom are in critical condition, according to Munson Healthcare. The suspect, a 42-year-old Michigan resident, used a folding knife and was subdued with the help of bystanders before police arrived on the scene.
Grand Traverse County Sheriff Michael Shea confirmed the attack began around 5:00 p.m. local time near the store's checkout area. Authorities believe the act was random, though further investigation is underway with the assistance of the FBI and Michigan State Police. "Based on the information we have at this moment, it appears to be a random act," said Shea during a press conference. The suspect’s identity remains undisclosed pending further investigation.
Witnesses described the scene as “chaotic.” Carrie Kidd, an employee at a nearby store, reported panic and confusion as customers fled into the parking lot. Law enforcement temporarily blocked off the surrounding area.
Munson Healthcare confirmed all 11 victims are receiving treatment: six are in critical condition, and five are in serious condition. The hospital praised the swift and dedicated response of its medical teams during the tragedy.
Michigan Governor Gretchen Whitmer expressed her condolences via social media: “Our thoughts are with the victims and the Traverse City community. I’m grateful to first responders for their swift response.”
Pete Buttigieg, former U.S. Secretary of Transportation and a Traverse City resident, added that he was “shaken by the senseless violence.”
Walmart Inc. released a statement condemning the incident: “Violence like this is unacceptable. Our thoughts are with the injured, and we are grateful for the quick response by emergency personnel,” said spokesperson Joe Pennington.
Local authorities emphasized the importance of public vigilance, noting that no community is immune to such violence. The FBI confirmed its involvement in supporting the ongoing investigation alongside the sheriff’s office.
