Apple Inc. Appoints John Ternus as CEO, Succeeding Tim Cook in Historic Leadership Transition

Apple Inc. announced a major leadership transition, naming John Ternus as its next Chief Executive Officer, effective September 1, 2026. Ternus will succeed Tim Cook, who will assume the role of Executive Chairman following nearly 15 years at the helm of the company.

The decision, unanimously approved by Apple’s Board of Directors, reflects a long-term succession planning strategy aimed at ensuring continuity in leadership and innovation at one of the world’s most valuable companies.

Leadership Transition Marks New Era for Apple

Ternus, currently Senior Vice President of Hardware Engineering, has been with Apple since 2001 and has played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s product ecosystem. He will also join Apple’s Board of Directors as part of the transition.

Cook will remain CEO through the summer to support a seamless handover and will continue to engage in strategic initiatives, including global policy discussions, in his new role as Executive Chairman.

“John Ternus has the mind of an engineer, the soul of an innovator, and the heart to lead with integrity,” said Cook. “He is the right person to lead Apple into the future.”

Ternus added: “I am profoundly grateful for the opportunity to carry Apple’s mission forward. Having spent nearly my entire career here, I am inspired by what we can achieve in the years ahead.”

Board and Governance Updates

As part of the leadership reshuffle, Arthur Levinson will transition from non-executive chairman to lead independent director.

Levinson praised Cook’s tenure, highlighting his role in transforming Apple into a global leader in both hardware and services, while reinforcing the company’s values around privacy, sustainability, and accessibility.

Tim Cook’s Legacy: Growth, Innovation, and Scale

Since becoming CEO in 2011, Cook has overseen a period of unprecedented growth:

  • Apple’s market capitalization expanded from approximately $350 billion to $4 trillion
  • Annual revenue increased from $108 billion to over $416 billion
  • The company’s global presence now spans more than 200 countries and territories
  • Apple’s installed base surpassed 2.5 billion active devices

Under his leadership, Apple introduced new product categories such as Apple Watch, AirPods, and Apple Vision Pro, while scaling its services business into a $100+ billion segment.

Cook also led Apple’s transition to proprietary silicon and strengthened its position on privacy as a core differentiator in the technology sector.

John Ternus: Engineering-Led Leadership for the Next Chapter

Ternus has been instrumental in the development of Apple’s core hardware portfolio, including iPhone, Mac, iPad, and AirPods. His leadership has driven advancements in product durability, materials innovation, and sustainability initiatives.

He has also overseen key product launches, including next-generation iPhone models and innovations in Mac performance, helping reinforce Apple’s competitive edge in global consumer technology markets.

Strategic Outlook: Continuity Meets Innovation

The transition comes at a critical moment for Apple as it navigates rapid shifts in artificial intelligence, hardware innovation, and global supply chains.

By elevating a long-tenured engineering leader, Apple signals a continued focus on product excellence, vertical integration, and long-term innovation.
