American Airlines and Google have signed a sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) certificate agreement covering 35 million gallons of fuel over a three-year period, supporting efforts to expand the use of lower-emission aviation fuel.
Under the agreement, the physical supply of sustainable aviation fuel will be delivered to Chicago O’Hare International Airport, one of American Airlines’ largest operational hubs.
The SAF certificate model allows organizations to help finance the production and adoption of sustainable aviation fuel even when the fuel is not consumed on their own flights, supporting broader decarbonization efforts across the aviation sector.
The partnership reflects growing collaboration between the aviation and technology industries as companies seek to reduce greenhouse gas emissions associated with air travel and corporate operations.
Sustainable aviation fuel is produced from renewable and lower-carbon feedstocks and is considered one of the aviation industry’s primary tools for reducing lifecycle carbon emissions while existing aircraft continue to rely on conventional jet engines.
The agreement adds to a broader trend of corporate partnerships aimed at accelerating SAF production and increasing the availability of alternative aviation fuels.
