Airbnb Backs WeRoad’s $58 Million Raise as Group Travel Startup Expands Into the U.S.

Airbnb has backed a new funding round for WeRoad, signaling growing investor interest in startups focused on community-driven travel experiences and the expanding “IRL economy.”

According to TechCrunch, the Milan-based group travel startup raised $58 million in a Series C funding round led by Airbnb, bringing WeRoad’s total funding to approximately $100 million.

The company plans to use the fresh capital to accelerate its international expansion strategy, with a particular focus on entering the U.S. market. The rollout is expected to begin in Austin, Texas, as the startup looks to establish a foothold among younger travelers increasingly prioritizing social experiences and in-person connections.

Founded in Italy, WeRoad organizes curated group trips designed primarily for millennials and Gen Z consumers seeking shared travel experiences with like-minded participants. The company has positioned itself at the center of what executives describe as the “IRL economy” — a broader shift toward offline communities, live experiences, and relationship-driven consumer behavior following years of digital saturation.

The investment also reflects Airbnb’s broader strategic interest in experiential travel and social discovery beyond traditional accommodation offerings. As competition intensifies across the travel and lifestyle sectors, companies are increasingly exploring models that combine tourism, community-building, and creator-style engagement.

The funding round arrives amid a broader recovery in global travel demand, particularly among younger consumers who continue to prioritize experiences over material spending despite ongoing economic uncertainty and elevated living costs in several major markets.

Industry analysts note that experiential travel startups have attracted growing investor attention as consumer behavior shifts toward personalized and socially immersive travel formats, especially among remote workers and digitally native audiences.

Austin’s selection as WeRoad’s first U.S. launch market also reflects the city’s growing reputation as a technology, startup, and lifestyle hub attracting younger professionals and international talent.
