Anthropic in Talks for Second $45 Billion AI Computing Deal With Nscale

Anthropic is in advanced discussions with AI infrastructure provider Nscale for a second computing deal potentially worth $45 billion, according to Bloomberg News reporting published on October 19.

The proposed agreement would support a second data center at Nscale’s Monarch campus in West Virginia, expanding the infrastructure available to the developer of Claude. The talks are ongoing, and the terms could still change.

The potential deal follows a similarly valued agreement between the companies in August, underscoring the scale of Anthropic’s efforts to secure the computing power needed to develop and operate its artificial intelligence systems.

Second Data Center Planned in West Virginia

The proposed facility would provide approximately 460 megawatts of computing capacity powered by Nvidia’s next-generation Vera Rubin chips. The additional infrastructure would expand Anthropic’s access to computing resources as demand for its AI services grows.

Nscale, a UK-based AI cloud infrastructure company backed by Nvidia, develops and operates data centers designed to supply the computing capacity required by advanced AI models.

The arrangement reflects a broader industry trend in which AI developers commit substantial sums to secure future computing capacity, while infrastructure providers invest in data centers, specialized chips and power supplies.

Infrastructure Spending Raises Investor Concerns

Anthropic’s expanding commitments come as investors increasingly scrutinize the cost of developing and operating AI systems. The industry’s largest companies are spending heavily on computing infrastructure, but the long-term financial returns remain uncertain.

Concerns have also intensified around infrastructure providers that depend on borrowing and a limited number of large customers. Nscale is seeking a public listing and has reportedly faced investor resistance to its proposed $30 billion valuation.

The company faces execution challenges as it works to deliver large infrastructure commitments, including projects that depend on access to reliable electricity and timely data center construction.

IPO Plans Add to the Pressure

Both Anthropic and Nscale are pursuing potential initial public offerings, making their growth prospects, capital requirements and ability to execute major contracts important considerations for prospective investors.

The proposed agreement has not been finalized. Its eventual terms and implementation will help determine how the companies balance the growing demand for AI computing with the substantial costs of building and operating the infrastructure behind it.
