In an exclusive interview, Anderson Silva, the engineer and owner of Robust Construction & Painting, share his insights on the pressing challenges and promising future of the construction industry. As a seasoned professional with over a decade of experience, Silva has witnessed firsthand the evolution of construction practices and the impact of technology on building projects. Silva highlights the current hurdles facing the industry, and the future of construction. Follow!

MIF: Anderson, you have over 13 years of experience in the civil construction sector. What keeps you motivated to continue in this field, which is always evolving?

AS: Hello! Indeed, the construction sector never stops growing and evolving, and it’s this constant evolution that motivates me. Over the years, I’ve witnessed significant changes, new technologies, and a transformation in market demands. With each project, there’s a new challenge, a new solution to be implemented, which makes me see this field as a continuous learning environment. Each construction project represents not only a new venture but also an opportunity to innovate, improve, and optimize processes. Civil construction is an area that demands dedication but also provides very rewarding results.

MIF: What are the biggest challenges you face in this sector, especially as a business owner?

AS: The biggest challenge, without a doubt, is managing people and processes. Civil construction requires great coordination among professionals from various areas, from engineers to specialized workers. In such a dynamic and competitive market, maintaining quality, meeting deadlines, and managing a diverse team can be a constant challenge. The fluctuation in material prices also requires a quick and efficient ability to adapt. However, what motivates me is knowing that by overcoming these challenges, we can deliver quality work and make a real difference in the construction landscape.

How do you perceive the importance of investing in the training of skilled labor in the United States, a country with such a strong construction market?

AS: The United States is a country with immense potential in the civil construction sector, and I believe the key to success is investing in people. One of the sector’s greatest challenges is the shortage of highly qualified professionals. Often, the lack of technical training and project management skills becomes a limiting factor for the growth of companies in this segment. As a business owner, my goal is not only to hire but also to train and develop talent. I intend to continue investing in the education and qualification of our employees so they can become top-tier professionals, ready to face the most demanding construction challenges.

MIF: What are your goals for the next few years, and how do you plan to achieve them?

AS: The main goal I’ve set for my career and for the company is to expand our operations and create more job opportunities for construction professionals. This means not just hiring more people but ensuring they are well-trained and prepared for the challenges they face. The idea is to create internal continuous training programs, investing in specific training and improving working conditions. I’m convinced that by transforming our employees into high-performing, skilled professionals, we will not only be building a better future for them but also contributing to the strengthening of the sector as a whole.

MIF: What kind of change do you believe the civil construction sector needs to undergo in the coming years to become more efficient and sustainable?

AS:
The sector needs to advance further towards sustainability and the adoption of new technologies. Energy efficiency in construction, the use of recyclable materials, and seeking solutions to minimize environmental impact are trends that should strengthen even more. Additionally, the digitalization of construction, with the use of software for planning, control, and even project execution, can bring significant productivity gains. I believe that these changes, along with the continuous qualification of the workforce, are essential for the sector’s evolution. Construction is not just about building structures; it’s about building a smarter and more sustainable future.

MIF: Anderson, what advice would you give to young people who want to pursue a career in civil construction and perhaps become entrepreneurs like you?

AS: The first piece of advice is to never stop learning. The construction market is constantly evolving, and it’s essential to stay up-to-date with new technologies, techniques, and trends. The second tip is to surround yourself with skilled people and always seek to improve your management skills. Success in the construction sector doesn’t depend only on technical knowledge but also on knowing how to manage people, resources, and deadlines effectively. Lastly, never underestimate the power of good working relationships, whether with suppliers, clients, or collaborators. Teamwork is one of the pillars of our success.

MIF: To conclude, what is your vision for the future of the civil construction sector in the United States and globally?

AS: The civil construction sector has a bright future, both in the United States and globally. On the global stage, the trend is for construction to become more focused on sustainability and technological innovation. I see a future where buildings will be smarter, more eco-friendly, and more integrated with the needs of society. As a business owner, my mission is to be at the forefront of this evolution, contributing to a better future through innovative projects and highly skilled teams.
