Washington Post: Eduardo Bolsonaro pushes for sanctions against Alexandre de Moraes through Trump administration

The U.S. newspaper The Washington Post reported on Thursday (July 17) that Brazilian congressman Eduardo Bolsonaro (PL-SP), currently on leave, has been pressuring Donald Trump's administration to impose sanctions on Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes.

According to the report, which cites four sources — including two connected to the U.S. government — Eduardo Bolsonaro allegedly submitted or promoted a formal document requesting punitive measures against Moraes. The proposal circulated among American officials but, according to the newspaper, was not well received by the U.S. Treasury.

The sanctions are reportedly being considered under the Global Magnitsky Act, which allows the U.S. government to penalize foreign nationals accused of human rights violations or major corruption, including asset freezes and visa restrictions.

The Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) — the Treasury Department’s body responsible for enforcing sanctions — has reportedly shown resistance to the proposal in recent weeks.

This development comes amid rising diplomatic tensions between Brazil and the United States, driven by a string of confrontational statements between Presidents Lula and Trump, new trade tariffs, and broader ideological clashes.

So far, no official statements have been issued by Brazilian or American authorities regarding the report.

đź’¬ The case raises significant questions about diplomacy, international jurisdiction, and the political use of legal instruments across borders.
