Trump Congratulates Javier Milei After Midterm Election Victory in Argentina

President Donald Trump congratulated his Argentine counterpart Javier Milei on Monday, calling him a “great winner” after Milei’s party defied opinion polls to make major gains in Argentina’s midterm legislative elections.

“Wow! That was a big win! In Argentina, I want to congratulate the winner. He was a GREAT winner — he had a lot of help from us!” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One, en route from Malaysia to Japan. “It was unexpected!”

With partial results released, Milei’s La Libertad Avanza coalition increased its representation in the Chamber of Deputies from 37 to at least 64 seats and captured at least six new seats in the Senate, significantly expanding the libertarian president’s legislative base.“A BIG WIN in Argentina for Javier Milei — a wonderful candidate endorsed by Trump! He’s making all of us look good,” the U.S. president wrote on Truth Social, adding: “Congratulations, Javier!”

U.S. Financial Support and Strategic Interests

The Trump administration had previously wagered heavily on Milei’s free-market reforms, offering Buenos Aires a $20 billion currency-swap facility earlier this month. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated the program could expand to $40 billion with private-sector participation.

The financial lifeline sought to calm investor fears following Milei’s poor showing in the September 7 Buenos Aires provincial elections and public anger over austerity measures and corruption scandals.

Ahead of the vote, investors feared another setback could derail Milei’s aggressive economic agenda, triggering a sell-off of Argentine assets and further weakening the peso. In an effort to stabilize the currency, Milei’s government reportedly spent $700 billion in reserves, prompting Washington’s emergency swap arrangement.

The White House defended the deal as a strategic move to counter China’s growing influence in Latin America, with Trump warning that the United States would “pull the plug” if Argentina faltered politically.“That election made a lot of money for the United States,” Trump told reporters. “The bonds have gone up. The whole debt rating has gone up.”

Milei Strengthens Grip on Power

Milei had spent his first two years in office governing with a minority in Congress. Sunday’s victory gives his administration greater freedom to advance its shock-therapy economic reforms without fear of legislative obstruction.

Under his government, monthly inflation has plunged from 12.8% before his inauguration in December 2023 to 2.1% in September 2025, according to Argentina’s national statistics agency.

Milei is expected to seek reelection in 2027, buoyed by renewed investor confidence and closer economic cooperation with the United States.
