Super Typhoon Ragasa Strikes East Asia, Leaves at Least 17 Dead and Causes Destruction in Hong Kong

East Asia has been struck by one of the strongest cyclones of the decade. Super Typhoon Ragasa has already resulted in at least 17 deaths, according to local authorities.

On Tuesday, September 23, Ragasa hit the Philippines and southern Taiwan before moving toward Hong Kong on Wednesday. The storm passed just 100 kilometers south of the city, prompting the government to issue the maximum storm warning signal No. 10 (T10), according to reports from the BBC and the South China Morning Post.

One of the most dramatic episodes occurred at the Fullerton Ocean Park Hotel, located in the coastal area of Aberdeen, Hong Kong. At around 6:00 a.m. local time, giant waves driven by the typhoon smashed through the hotel’s glass doors and violently flooded the lobby, reported Hong Kong newspaper The Standard.

Videos posted on social media captured scenes of panic: water rushing into the hotel interior, one person being swept away by the current, while others climbed to higher ground to escape. Shouts of distress from guests and staff can be heard in the background.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation and provide assistance to the hardest-hit areas. The final toll of victims and damages is still being assessed.
