China Reports Strong Export Growth in November Despite Sharp Decline in Shipments to the United States

China recorded a stronger than expected rise in total exports in November according to new data released by the General Administration of Customs. Overall outbound shipments increased 5.9 percent compared with the previous year surpassing analyst forecasts and reversing the contraction reported in October. The figures were widely covered by Reuters Bloomberg and CNBC which noted that external demand in several emerging markets and parts of Europe contributed to the rebound.

Despite the broader improvement exports to the United States continued to fall sharply. U S bound shipments declined 29 percent marking the eighth consecutive month of year over year decreases. Economic analysts cited by Reuters said the persistent drop underscores unresolved structural and political frictions between the two countries even as both sides recently signaled efforts to stabilize trade relations.

China’s import performance was more modest. Inbound shipments rose 1.9 percent in November missing market expectations. Economists interviewed by Bloomberg attributed the slow import recovery to subdued domestic consumption reflecting ongoing weakness in the housing sector rising household caution and job market uncertainty.

The November trade data suggests that while China is regaining some momentum in global markets challenges remain in restoring balanced domestic demand and improving economic ties with the United States.
