Brazil Supreme Court Orders House Arrest of Former President Jair Bolsonaro

Brazil’s Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes has ordered the house arrest of former President Jair Bolsonaro, citing violations of prior judicial restrictions amid ongoing investigations into an alleged coup plot. The ruling also prohibits Bolsonaro from using a mobile phone—either directly or through intermediaries—and bans all visits except from his legal counsel or individuals expressly authorized by the court.

According to the official ruling issued on Monday, the former head of state failed to comply with conditions imposed in July, when he was already facing restrictions due to accusations that he attempted to undermine Brazil's democratic process after his 2022 electoral defeat.

The order follows growing evidence that Bolsonaro sought political interference from U.S. President Donald Trump. Trump has publicly condemned the Brazilian investigation, labeling it a “witch hunt,” and recently announced a new round of steep tariffs on Brazilian exports, escalating diplomatic and economic tensions between the two countries.

Bolsonaro's press office confirmed the arrest order and restrictions.

Global Reaction

The move has drawn extensive international media coverage. Leading outlets such as Financial Times, The Wall Street Journal, El País, and Reuters reported not only on the legal developments but also on the broader implications for democracy and regional stability in Latin America.

International coverage has highlighted that Bolsonaro is facing serious charges, including conspiracy to commit a coup and attempts to assassinate high-ranking judicial authorities. Analysts warn that the developments could further polarize Brazil’s political environment and strain diplomatic relations with key global partners.
