Airline CEOs Urge Congress to Restore Airport Funding and Increase Pay for Aviation Workers

Leading U.S. airline executives are urging Congress to restore critical airport funding and increase wages for aviation workers, warning that staffing shortages and underinvestment in airport infrastructure could threaten the stability of the country’s aviation system.

All indications suggest that the aviation sector continues to face mounting operational pressure due to a shortage of airport personnel, including air traffic controllers, ground handlers, and security staff.

“Once again, air travel is the political football amid another government shutdown,” the executives wrote in an open letter to Congress published Sunday online and in The Washington Post.

Workforce shortages affecting operations

Airlines say that while passenger demand has rebounded strongly, staffing levels across airport operations have not kept pace.

Executives stressed that airport workers play a critical role in maintaining safety, efficiency, and passenger experience. Higher wages and more stable funding for aviation programs could help attract and retain qualified personnel.

Industry representatives also warned that delays and operational disruptions could worsen if workforce gaps continue.

Federal funding debate

Airline leaders are calling on Congress to reinforce federal aviation funding programs, including support mechanisms tied to airport infrastructure modernization and workforce training.

They argue that long-term investment is necessary to keep U.S. airports competitive globally, particularly as international travel continues to grow.

According to aviation policy experts, the debate over funding is expected to intensify as lawmakers review upcoming budget allocations tied to transportation and infrastructure spending.
