South Korea’s Hyundai Motor Group has announced plans to invest $15.5 billion in India through 2032, reinforcing its commitment to expanding automotive manufacturing, research and development, and international production capabilities in one of the world’s largest automobile markets.
According to Reuters, the investment will support the expansion of Hyundai Motor and Kia operations in India, where the two automakers already produce more than 1.4 million vehicles annually.
The announcement followed a meeting between Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Euisun Chung and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, highlighting the strategic importance of India to the company’s long-term international expansion.
The investment represents a significant commitment to India’s automotive industry as global manufacturers reassess production networks, supply chains and access to high-growth consumer markets.
Hyundai and Kia to Expand Manufacturing Capacity
The $15.5 billion investment plan will extend through 2032 and is intended to increase the manufacturing capabilities of Hyundai and Kia in India.
The two brands already have a substantial industrial presence in the country, with combined annual vehicle production exceeding 1.4 million units.
Expanding this capacity could strengthen India’s role within Hyundai Motor Group’s international manufacturing network, supporting both domestic vehicle demand and exports to overseas markets.
The strategy also reflects the growing importance of geographic diversification in the automotive industry.
Automakers are increasingly evaluating production locations based on manufacturing costs, supplier availability, transportation infrastructure, trade relationships and proximity to major consumer markets.
India offers a large domestic automotive market alongside an established manufacturing base, making it an important location for companies seeking to expand production beyond their traditional industrial centers.
$700 Million Allocated to Research and Development
Approximately $700 million of Hyundai Motor Group’s planned investment will be directed toward its Indian research and development operations, according to the reported announcement.
The funding is expected to strengthen the company’s local engineering and technological capabilities.
Research and development investments play an important role in automotive manufacturing, particularly as the industry expands its focus on vehicle software, electrification, advanced safety systems and manufacturing efficiency.
The company also plans to establish a dedicated investment entity in India.
While the available announcement does not detail the entity’s complete operating structure, its creation forms part of the group’s broader strategy to expand its presence in the country.
The announcement came after Executive Chair Euisun Chung met with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
India has sought to strengthen its position as a global manufacturing center by attracting international companies and expanding domestic production capabilities.
